The joy of commitment

Diving board

At the beginning of 2011 I made a commitment to myself. The commitment was to consistently write two blog entries a week. Before then, I was writing, but not consistently. I have always liked writing, but have to confess that I was a bit scared to make that commitment.

You see, in my mind, if I HAD to write 2 blogs a week, all kind of “bad things” could happen:

  • I would see writing as “duty” and it would lose its appeal.
  • I would run out of ideas.
  • It would take too much of my time.
  • I would not be able to come up with great content every time.

To my surprise, none of my fears came true. In fact,

  • writing has become easier.
  • my ideas have multiplied, not dried up.
  • the more I write, the better I become, and it takes less time too!
  • I’m enjoying my writing even more.

What’s so important about commitment?

Our brains like commitment. Commitment signals to the brain that you are serious. This brings more focus, better connections, and more “power” to your brain cells. After awhile, a new habit is established and your commitment is easy to meet, because now it’s part of your life.

That’s what has been going on in my brain. My commitment to my blog has changed it. It’s now “primed” to go into writing mode. It’s also more “awake” to see experiences and the world around me as opportunities for writing. Two blogs a week? No problem! I enjoy writing them!

What about you? What have you been avoiding to commit to? Why not “take the plunge,” and make that commitment for this coming year? Want more joy in your life? Commit more often. You might discover, like I did, the joy of commitment.
