When I walk into organizations I often hear complaints about the use and abuse of technology. We are in danger of becoming a race of keyboard tappers unable to communicate with each other, meaningfully, in a natural manner, face to face.

Leadership lessons from nature

Majestic, big, small, tall, dead, huge, new, old, very old, and everything in between. Trees are the tallest free-standing organisms in the world. Trees live longer and become more massive than any other living thing on earth.

On my recent vacation I spent time in Yosemite. While my husband bravely undertook a 6 mi. trail to see one of the three groves that include Sequoias, I stayed sitting under the trees. Today we are proud to live in the “information age.” Knowledge is enriching, powerful, and can even be inspiring. Scientists want to break every code and genome. Leaders like to think they know a great deal. We like to know because knowledge seems to give us control. Control over ourselves, our organizations, and even our future.

But what if the accumulation of knowledge is not the best answer for innovation and change. What if genuine conversations don’t happen if you think you know everything?What if to move toward greater wisdom does not mean to accumulate more knowledge? What if not-knowing is a gift? Peter Drucker once said: “Every organization has to prepare for the abandonment of everything it does.” Today, more than ever, the challenge of change is not only how fast to change, but how to look for innovative ways of doing things. It is not only how to get better. It’s how to get different.

Given the need for innovation, every business should find ways not only to facilitate, but to stimulate innovation. When I talk to leaders in organizations, most seem to recognize this need.
